Shopify checkout now supports WebMCP: in-browser AI agents can place orders once the buyer confirms

Shopify has added WebMCP tools to its checkout flow. AI agents in the browser can read and update the current checkout and, once the buyer confirms, submit the order. When buyer input is needed, such as 3D Secure verification, or when a blocking UI extension appears, the tools hand control back to the buyer; merchants need no extra configuration.

Shopify's WebMCP tools previously covered the storefront and cart and now extend to checkout and order confirmation, so browser agents can help with the whole shopping flow from finding a product to placing the order.

The changelog lists four tools that an agent can call at checkout: navigate to the storefront (navigate_to_storefront), read the checkout state, messages and post-purchase order details (get_checkout), update supported checkout fields (update_checkout), and submit the checkout after the buyer confirms (complete_checkout).

These tools run inside checkout-web and share the same state as the checkout UI. They serve agents that shop your store in the browser on the user's behalf, not back-end API integrations.
