Overview
Intelligent File Organizer is the file-organizer skill in ComposioHQ's awesome-claude-skills collection. It turns Claude Code into an organization assistant for your own computer: it looks at a folder such as Downloads, Documents, or Projects, explains what is there, proposes a cleaner structure, and then carries out the moves and renames once you agree. It is a single SKILL.md of instructions that relies on ordinary shell tools (ls, find, du, mv, mkdir), so there is nothing extra to install.
Workflow
- Understand the scope. Claude asks which directory, what the main problem is, what to leave alone, and how aggressive to be.
- Analyze. It summarizes file counts, types, sizes, and date ranges, using commands like
du -shand a file-extension count. - Identify patterns by type (documents, images, archives, code), by purpose (work vs. personal, active vs. archive), and by date.
- Find duplicates by hash, by name, or by size, then recommends which copy to keep.
- Propose a plan listing new folders, moves, renames, and deletions, plus files that need your decision, and waits for yes, no, or modify.
- Execute after approval, logging every move and preserving modification dates.
- Summarize what changed and suggest a weekly, monthly, and quarterly maintenance routine.
Quick Start
Copy the file-organizer folder into your skills directory (for Claude Code, ~/.claude/skills/), start Claude Code in the folder you want to tidy, and ask:
Help me organize my Downloads folder
Find duplicate files in my Documents folder and help me decide which to keep
Organize these photos by year and month
Use Cases
- Clearing a Downloads folder with hundreds of files into Work, Personal, Installers, and Archive.
- Separating active projects from ones untouched for months.
- Sorting photos into year/month folders from EXIF or modification dates.
Limitations
- It runs real
mvand delete commands on your files. The skill requires confirmation before deleting, but keep a backup for large clean-ups. - Duplicate detection example commands use
md5and GNUfind -printf, so they may need adjusting per operating system.
FAQ
Will it delete files without asking?
No. The instructions say to always confirm before deleting and to present a plan before making changes.
Does it need an API or extra software?
No. It uses standard shell commands through Claude Code.
Alternatives
- MarkItDown converts documents to Markdown once they are organized.
- Planning with Files for organizing project plans rather than files on disk.
- Claude Cowork for desktop file tasks through Claude's app.
