Claude Code Rust
Claude Code Rust is an independent terminal user interface built in Rust with Ratatui and Crossterm. It uses the Claude Agent SDK for core sessions and integrates with the upstream claude command for configuration and related workflows. It is not an Anthropic announcement that Claude Code has been rewritten in Rust. The repository was created on February 8, 2026, and the latest release checked for this entry was v0.14.9 on October 1.
Features and intended use
The official project repository describes streaming chat, tool calls, permission handling, diffs, MCP and subagents. The appeal is the terminal interface and workflow around Claude’s agent runtime. Switching the renderer does not establish better model quality, and the maintainers do not provide a general performance benchmark proving lower CPU use or faster task completion.
The native interface still depends on the Agent SDK runtime. Keep that distinction in mind when evaluating startup time or troubleshooting a session: not every part of the execution path is Rust. Upstream authentication and applicable service entitlements remain relevant.
A useful pilot
Use a clean or disposable branch in a small repository. Start in plan mode with claude-rs --permission-mode plan "Review this project", inspect the proposed steps and check how permission requests are displayed. Then permit a bounded edit, review the diff and run the project’s existing tests. Compare the interface with the upstream client on the same task before adopting it for regular work.
MCP tools and subagents broaden what a session can access. Review configured servers and filesystem permissions separately from the convenience of the interface. Approval prompts do not replace checking the resulting edits.
Installation, cost and limitations
The documentation offers npm install -g claude-code-rust and launches it with claude-rs. Read the installation documentation first, including requirements for the upstream claude command and runtime. The project’s code is Apache 2.0 licensed; the Claude Agent SDK and services have their own terms. Installing a free interface does not make upstream model usage free. Check your applicable plan or API billing before a long session.
This is a pre-1.0 project. Release v0.14.9 fixes slash-menu Enter submission affected in versions v0.12.0 through v0.14.8, improves command matching and adds installer advisories. These are concrete release changes, not a guarantee that every upstream feature is identical.
FAQ and alternatives
Is this the official Claude Code client? No. It is a third-party interface around the agent runtime.
Is all inference local? A Rust TUI does not by itself change where the configured model runs.
Compare Claude Code for the upstream experience, OpenCode for another coding interface, and Magpie for a different terminal workflow. Browse development tools and the Claude Code tag. Begin with plan mode and one reviewed change to decide whether the UI suits your working habits.
